$600 million. Although modifications are being made for the Australians,
like replacing the DU armour with ceramic plate, the Abrams tank still
fires DU munitions. The choice of the tank is to strengthen the alliance
with the US by boosting "interoperability" for future Iraq-style
conflicts. In an indication of the strategic importance of the move,
the US Administration will handle the deal, selling the tanks directly
to Australia. Critics say the Abrams are unsuitable as they are too
heavy to be airlifted and deployed easily.
